Well after finishing an Enuos Mk1 Turbo conversion a few years back i decided to go back to the Honda thing and run an Integra DC2 (something more practical).
After another year of track days and the annual Ring trip i wanted to go back to rear wheel drive.
So Honda S2000 was on the list, bloody love thrashing a VTEC on the track, but i noticed on K20.org that the guys in the US were putting the K20’s into MR2 roadsters. So after pricing up the parts it looked as if i could build a track focused Toyonda for the same Monday as an Strandard S2000. Knew it would be some work but with new car its nice to try a new chalange so that was it.
First was sourcing a cheap car with a damaged Toyota 1zz 1.8, the early models did have a tenancy to use oil and bottom end knock wasn’t uncommon so finding a car wasn’t to hard. Eventually settled on a car about 1.5 hour drive away and limped it home.
Completely standard form with a nice clean fabric roof.
Did think about the 2zz conversion (Engine found in the Elise and Tsport range) this would be cheaper, but i was worried that it would be enough and cost for Apexi Ecu and mods didn’t seem to make sense. The K20 offers more power out the box KPRO ecu’s are cheaper plus could always convert it to a K24. To be honest for reliability i wanted to stay NA rather than going down the force induction route.
Queue the collection of parts and running gear, before i could really start ripping it a part i needed to prepare the driveway.
Managed to find some 16″ RAYS – VOLK GTP/SL 7.5, in need of a little attention so stripped them down and had them professional refurbished in a dark Bronze colour.
Next up was the engine and gearbox from a Honda Civic Type R with ECU and loom. Bought the relevant service items a long with a new clutch and an MFactory LSD to go into the gearbox.
After putting all back together i put aside a weekend to remove the old engine and gearbox and get this all fitted on the Innovative Engine mounts. To be honest all went quite smoothly, removed the drive shafts and rear suspension arms and hubs so i could lower the hole gearbox and engine onto a dolly (not one you put in a dress).
Next came the wiring and adapting the throttle body arm finally tuning the gear selector. The Gear linkage kit allows you to reuse the standard lines but it does require adjusting to make the shifter settle correctly. In addition to the engine work the suspension was replaced with some nice new Minster R coilovers.
Now i bought this car back in October, my fellow “Island Monkees” had chossen a date for next years Ring trip for Mid May, so the plan was to finish this car ready for the 1k mile round trip plus Ring laps to see how the hours of labour and thousand spent had produced.
It was so close it wasn’t going to make it, i was finishing the car in the evening in the Holiday Inn car park (work had me at a customers site), so driving to and from the site was the only pre flight checks for Thursday morning start. I’m sure i’ll get to writing up a Ring trip event at some point.
Anyway it made it there and back without any issue’s, oh except for the block of wood holding the battery had worked lose.
Put together a quick vid for on the Toyonda so take a look..
